Hide and Seek…You’re It.

August 28th, 2008

Did you know in a recent study, researchers found sugar was far more addictive than cocaine? The study showed that 94% of the rats that were allowed to choose mutually between sugar water and cocaine, chose sugar. Even the rats that were addicted to cocaine quickly switched their preference to sugar, once it was offered as a choice.

As one reader commented in my previous post, even though sugar is not classified as a drug, if it walks like a duck and sounds like a duck…! So, if you’re like me, you have sworn off soda and turned the candy bowl into an unsalted nut bowl. No more sugar, no more problems, right?

Well yes, except for the fact that once again the food industry has cleverly snuck its addictive sugars into products that we would never think of looking. Why, you ask? Why not, if sugar is as addictive as the researchers suggest, we will of course be buying more to feed our need. Their concern is strictly to keep our sugar jones at a simmering boil so we spend more money!

Here are 6 types of products whose labels could bear more scrutiny:

1. Spaghetti Sauce-A half cup of store-bought sauce can contain as many as three teaspoons of corn syrup or sugar.

2. Ketchup- Ketchup can be 20% sugar or more. Not to mention that you’ll be getting 7% of your daily sodium allowance in one tablespoon.

3. Reduced Fat Cookies-So they took out the fat, but guess what they replaced it with? You bet, sugar and because there’s no fat to make you feel full you’ll be tempted to eat more “guilt-free” cookies.

4. Low Fat Salad Dressing-Like the cookies, they have taken out the fat and added extra salt and sugar to make up for it.

5. Bread-Most processed breads, especially white hamburger and hot dog buns contain a good deal of sugar or corn syrup, which is what gives them their golden-brown crust.

6. Fast Food-Needless to say, fast food is generally not good for you. But even if you’re staying away from the sodas and the shakes, everything from the burgers to the fries and even the salads are a potential place to find hidden sugar.

Keep Reading your Labels People!

Until we meet again,

Brandi

What brilliant information and I am absolutely addicted to sugar! I do have it in moderation but if I did not make a concerted effort I would eat it in massive amounts. I am the rat that picks the sugar.

Could you please send me the link to the study to which this post is referring?

I clicked on the link, and landed on the following blank page: http://urilife.net/anewfeast/samples.html

    Thanks,

OK, Brandi - I try to think of myself as informed when it comes to what is in the things I eat. And a couple off of your list really surprised me. Spaghetti sauce and ketchup! I didn’t realize. And, I’m going to check our breads out too. We use whole-wheat bread, but still I’m going to check out the ingredients. I go in streaks where I’ll check the ingredients on things - this reminds me that I really should just make it a regular habit.

    Mike- Thank you!

Heida- I think many of us battle a sugar addiction, as this is just a few of the many products that “hide” their sugar content. Kudos to you for making the effort!

Metta- Sorry about the link, it was a mistake. I will correct that.

Lance- I was just as surprised, that’s why I posted it! I am the same way, but am making an honest effort to stick to my guns and check all of the labels.

a nice post by brandi , very informative , its true that its more addictive then cocaine and almost every food related product we have in our market got excess of sugar , but we shud keep in mind that having a high intake of sugar from different ranges of product can increase our sugar level and its behind ones obesity too.
